ENERGY SAVING TIPS

The Irish National Energy Assessors (NEA) have compiled alist of energy saving tips that are useful to the consumer coming into the winter months.
No Cost Energy Tips
Saving energy needn't cost a fortune. We've compiled some no cost and low cost ways for you to to become more energy efficient.

No Cost Ways of Saving Energy

  • Turn Off everything not in use; Lights, TV’s Computers etc.
  • Activate the "Sleep" feature on Computers and office equipment
  • Regularly clean light fittings and lamp shades.
  • Only put as much water in the kettle as you need (but make sure the heating elements of electric kettles are covered!).
  • When cooking, turn down a boiling saucepan and put a lid on to reduce energy use and condensation. Better yet, use a microwave oven.
  • Have a shower instead of a bath.
  • Set the Hot Water Thermostat to 55 - 60 Degrees Celsius
  • Close your curtains at dusk making sure not to cover radiators.
  • Close all doors in unused rooms
  • Only use washing machines and dishwashers when full.
  • Wash clothes at as low a temperature as possible.
  • Stop the dishwasher before the drying cycle and open the door to let the dishes air dry and always use the economy button where possible.
  • Defrost your refrigerator and freezer at least once every 6 months. Frost Build increases energy consumption.

Low Cost Ways of Saving Energy

  • Fix dripping hot water taps promptly. This will save you €€’s per year.
  • Always keep your fridge fully stocked. An empty fridge costs more to run.
  • Fit Thermostatic controls on radiators. Set a lower temperature in rooms that are not being used.
  • Weather Strip or Draught Strip all windows and doors. Seal all gaps where applicable but do not seal ventilation areas in walls and roof.
  • Fit CFL light bulbs throughout your home.
  • Install Modern Vents in walls in your home. They slow down heat loss through vents while still allowing air circulation throughout your home.
  • Have NEA provide you with an Energy Audit and start saving money straight away.
